Note: When you post your original post in order to receive full credit ensure you are demonstrating analytical thought, referring to course material and answering the question fully. Also, you will not receive full credit if you do not respond to one of your fellow students posts also demonstrating analytical thought and referring to course material. Simply stating your opinion, or “good job” will not suffice for credit. Do not use external sources, be specific to the material in the attachment. You must read: INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCUSSIONS TO DO GREAT POST.

Q: As we have read in the chapter 12, there are many variations on both diversion and re-entry programs across the country.
Diversion and re-entry are in both jails and prisons and focus importance on different life domains, sometimes incorporating an element of supervision to help with ensuring success for the individual. What elements do you see as the most important and why?
I find that discharge planning and jail diversion are very important, especially for those with a serious mental illness. Jail diversion is described as a way to divert individuals with a serious mental illness and/or substance use disorders away from jail and in exchange provide a link to support services and community-based treatment. Discharge planning also has the best interest in mind for improvement. It is defined by how a practice provides a mental healthcare plan for the continuation of patient treatment even upon discharge. For instance, if an individual is receiving mental health treatment while incarcerated, they should also be receiving it during reentry. I believe that both of these elements can play a role in decreasing recidivism and the quote by George Bush agrees with this, “America is the land of the second chance, and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should be a better life.” (Slate, Buffington-Vollum, Johnson 447).
