Critique #1 – Quantitative/Positivist/Post-Positivist Paradigm
Points:
length: about 5 pages double-spaced
find a quantitative paradigm article where you understand the method! (Best is a an RCT or quasi-experiment study on the effect of an intervention or program on two different groups.)
choose an “empirical” study, not a review and not an opinion poll survey
put the full reference of the article at the start of your paper
critique is in part speculative because the article doesn’t/can’t give you all the information you need to judge methods
Outline of Critique (feel free to adapt this to what makes sense to you – creativity is allowed!)
Summary of study (make sure you describe the methodology – as well as research questions and results)
Methodological Strong Points
Critique – have two sections one a critique of internal validity and the other of external validity (from the standpoint of quantitative paradigm) – this section is the focus of your paper
Author’s response – What would the author say to your critiques? Try to respond briefly to as many as possible, especially the major ones.
Overall assessment — Your view on whether this is good research.
Using “Document 2”, critique the article based on the notes found in “Document 3”. Document 3’s notes should guide you in the critique of the study in Document 2. The paper does not require any additional sources. The paper must include: short summary, methodological strong points, critique of internal validity, critique of external validity, author’s response, and overall assessment. The critique should be 5 pages.
