As technological advancements become prevalent in most parts of the world, a new form of student population has developed. Virtual learning communities constitute online instructors and students and significantly differ from the conventional classroom in terms of various aspects, such as technology, diversity, and population. Digital education has multiple implications on 21st-century education, pedagogy, and the nature of modern learning.
This research aims to evaluate the relationship between technology and the uncertain future of education. Researchers argue that the advent of computer systems and related components signal the revolution of the education system, whereby students will have autonomous access to innumerable sources of information. Proponents of technology and innovation in the learning sector indicate that an online environment allows teachers and instructors to become practical guides that enable children to acquire new forms of schooling (Bigum and Kenway 96). However, critics associate digital education with entertainment rather than quality information development. According to various scholars, online sites lack the necessary consistency of teaching, which will lead to concentrated technical competence and a lack of proper theoretical knowledge (Dinerstein 581). Thus, examining how power
systems popularize and influence digital education promotes understanding the effects, future concerns, and possibilities for 21st-century education and pedagogy.
The ambiguous nature of online learning and teaching creates diverse perspectives regarding the value of education offered to students. Bigum and Jane describe four primary groups that create and define diverse scenarios reflecting the relationship between technology and information provision (98). First, ‘boosters’ are the most prominent promoters for the integration of digital media in education, indicating that technology improves access to information. The second group, ‘anti-schoolers,’ presents the idea that it is impossible to reconfigure schools through computer technology, leading to its demise. ‘Critics and doomsters’ represent the third and fourth groups that are significantly against the integration of new information in education; citing substantial problems and social damages, including harassment and pornography (Bigum and Jane 101). Nonetheless, Supporters of using information technologies in schools are relatively greater than skeptics. According to Emejulu and Callum, positive digital education and citizenship require transparent social relations with technology for social justice development (136). Other scholars define technology as the American theology since it is a source of power and superiority in the modern world.
Dinerstein insinuates that technology and innovation are concept functions of white supremacy (570). The basic cultural conventions and ideologies of technology are based on Western studies during the second and third generations. In this view, the rise of digital education means the expansion of Westernization across global learning institutions, threatening conventional teaching cultures in diverse regions. These different rationales
regarding the future of technology in education and its impacts on learning necessitate comprehensive research to manage uncertainties in the sector.
Objectives and Research Questions (SEE NOTES BELOW)
The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the effects, future possibilities, and concerns of digital technologies on society, specifically the transition from conventional schooling to online learning. This study seeks to answer the following research questions:
How do systems of power, such as white supremacy and colonialism, circulate through technology and influence digital pedagogy?
How have digital technologies impacted society, and especially 21st-century education, pedagogy, and learning in and out of school?
What are the educational possibilities, concerns, and hopes for digital technology and pedagogy in the 21st century and beyond?
A systematic review of relevant information sources is employed to explore the topic of digital education and its impact on pedagogy in the current era. Academic sources utilized embody published articles and journals, as well as education data reports. Springer, JSTOR, and Google Scholar are essential scholarly databases used to gain access to crucial information sources concerning technology and education. The systematic review enhances the researcher’s understanding of the current state of pedagogy and learning in relation to information technologies.
Using a comprehensive review of scholarly sources, this research aims to minimize the ambiguity of digital pedagogy, its circulation, and future expectations of information technologies in the schooling system. Thus, developed information seeks to answer the three primary questions and contribute to the current knowledge on online learning practices.
Professor Critiques: it seems you would like to do more research on the core issues of our class and of digital pedagogy–make sure that you are selecting these words intentionally: “effects”, “future possibilities” and “concerns” — and of course I will ask you: effects for whom? (because often the answers are different for different people in the world, according to their socioeconomic status or relationship to colonialism) –e.g. the “effects” will be very different for an edtech CEO versus a resourced student versus a child who is having to do the mining for minerals (so just be specific on who you are imagining).
Overall, you’re asking very large questions– I think for the scope of this project it will be better to pick one of these questions, or to ask a much more specific question. you can still trace systems of power (white supremacy, colonialism) AND evaluate the effects… in fact, I think that’s what the speakers do in the Abolition video talks about (at least Dr. Love seems to do that). A next step could be to narrow down your research question to ONE specific question!
