Kotter Change Management Model
Change management is a multifaceted practice that necessitates careful planning and the participation of stakeholders on all levels in effort to make a successful transition to new and effective change across an organization, on both a local and global scale if applicable. The change management process “Aims at realizing the strategic goals and improving an organizations preparedness for meeting both internal as well as external challenges, which may influence business growth and profitability” (Management Study Guide, 2021, Pg. 01). For organizations to stay relevant today “Companies must undergo through progressive transformation and evolve as per the changing business environment” (Management Study Guide, 2021, Pg. 01). When organizations discover imperfections in systems and processes that begin to yield downward trends, stunted growth, slow productivity, and minimum profitability; it is essential that organizational leaders and key stakeholders pivot quickly to devise a plan of action to alter undesirable outcomes. It is also crucial that when preparing an organization for change, no matter the complexity, leaders must follow a strategic plan that will position the entire organization for success and grant long-term viability within the organizations targeted market. That said, it is critical that positions of influence during the onset of the transition to change, tap into all viable resources prior to creating the path in which change will occur. This will help with avoiding the typical pitfalls many organizations experience that make change more difficult to implement and almost impossible to sustain.
Accessing reliable resources is a necessary step for leaders to successful formulate a game plan that will propel change forward. “Change management is a discipline that combines processes, tools, and goal-oriented models to guide organizations through the changes necessary to achieve business goals” (Alexander, 2021, Pg. 02). There are several resources by way of theories that can help organizations to yield desired results; however, “Many organizations originate with leadership and change management via guru, John Kotter” (Mindtools, 2020, Pg.01). Mr. Kotter’s model creates a blueprint that allows change to systematically create urgency, form strong leadership teams, create, and communicate a vision for change, eliminate obstacles, yield short-term victories; as well as build and anchor the needed changes within the corporate infrastructure (Mindtools, 2020).
