It is every career person’s dream to work in a positive work environment. Work environments that offer growth and development opportunities for employees and have open communication and administrative support through accessible and fair leaders are considered positive (Lindberg & Vingård, 2012). This makes such environments high performance and productivity breeding places that propel the achievement of organizational goals.
On the contrary, adverse work environments exhibit unhealthy communication patterns and mostly have toxic leaders. As a result, employees develop low morale, which in turn affects their performance. This is because toxic leaders in the workplace minimally incorporate teamwork and collaboration, making employees feel unrecognized. Also, such environments offer little to no opportunities for the career growth of its employees.
As leaders, managers are responsible for the type of work environment that exists within an organization. The first role in the creation of a positive work environment is to encourage employee involvement through teamwork. Managers that value employee involvement through collaboration creates space for their growth and development (Lindberg & Vingård, 2012). Also, when employees are involved in issues like decision-making, it is easy to recognize them, which is crucial in boosting their motivation and performance. For example, managers that let employees come up with ideas for a project while offering guidance have been recorded to achieve more positive results than those who think such decisions are their sole responsibilities.
Managers can begin turning a toxic work environment into a positive one by becoming positive, fair, and accessible. After that, they should foster skilled and open communication in the workplace. Open communication, in turn, improves employee input and involvement, leading to high performance (Ramesh & Vasuki, 2013). However, the performance is primarily reliant on whether the leader recognizes the employees’ efforts and motivates them. Both employees and managers have a part to play in the creation of a conducive work environment. For the employees, collaboration, skilled communication, and creating a social climate are the most crucial roles they can play to have a positive work environment. Consequently, employees should be flexible and ready to adapt to the workplace to be pleasant and functional.
