A Response to Percival Everett’s “The Appropriations of Culture”
The short story, “The Appropriations of Culture” was written by contemporary writer, Percival Everett.  First published in 1998, the main character, Daniel Barkley, is a jazz guitarist who lives in an unidentified university town somewhere in the South Carolina.  Patrons at a bar where he plays request a song –– a song that is an unlikely request at a jazz club.  Daniel Barkley’s performance and subsequent actions are reflected in the story’s title.  For this assignment you may listen to the story, read it, or both.  Links are provided below.
You may have a strong emotional reaction to this story –– which you can certainly express but consider the following questions as well.
Is Barkley successful in his act of transformation?
Is this a “cultural appropriation”?
This story is 23 years old — could this plot take place in 2021?
Do say whether you read the story or listened to the broadcast or both, and if you feel that influences your opinion.
Your response should be a minimum of two page but no more than 3 pages.  Do proofread!  Grammar and writing will count for more in this final paper (40% of your grade)
