Statement of Purpose
MA in Spanish UNC Charlotte, NC
I have been a teacher for about 20 years. I taught in my home country, Colombia for 7 years. I was an EFL (English as a foreign Language) teacher which reflected my love for Languages. I graduated from the “Distrital” university in Bogota, Colombia. I received a bachelor of Arts degree with majors in English as a foreign language and Spanish plus a minor in Education. I also completed courses within the specialization in Linguistics applied to the teaching of English at “La Gran Colombia” university in Bogota, Colombia.I have worked at school and university level. I taught EFL at catholic and bilingual schools in Colombia as well as at “La Sabana” university where I taught EFL to Intermediate level students. I also served as a Spanish tutor for Students from USA, Canada and the UK. After finishing my second year at La “Sabana” University I decided that I wanted to advance my career by teaching in a foreign country, the USA. That dream became a reality when I applied to VIF (Visiting International Faculty Program) now known as Participate. I ended being accepted into this program as an exchange teacher, it was a dream come true.
I became not only an International teacher but also a cultural ambassador proudly representing my country. I arrived to the USA in June 25th 2007. I started working for Duplin County Schools as an ESL teacher at an Elementary school. This job gave me the opportunity of helping many students and their families. I also served as a translator of school letters as well as an Interpreter at teacher-parent conferences and IEP meetings.
By serving as a translator and Interpreter at public schools I was able to enhance the relationship between parents and educators, I was also able to build stronger relationships within the school community. I became the parents and teachers voice and that is powerful and rewarding. The responsibilities of being an Interpreter can be big but the rewards can be even greater.
The MA in Spanish with a concentration in Translating and Translation studies is a match for my personal and professional goals. I wish to enhance my skills in both Translation and Interpreting. I am interested in serving the Hispanic community either as a legal, medical or community Interpreter, so this program matches my interests and dreams.
I would also love to pursue a PhD in translation and Interpreting studies or in international studies in the future. I think the concept of cultural understanding, equity and equality are paramount in our society. Cultures around the world are to be honored and respected, beyond all prejudice.
