SUBJECT: Term Paper Topic Proposal
Genetically Modified Foods, AquaBounty Technologies, and the Food and Drug Administration.
In this paper I will focus to analyze the FDA’s approval process for genetically engineered animals in the context of AquaBounty Technologies’ efforts to bring AquAdvantage salmon to market, as well as the FDA’s approval procedure for genetically modified animals generally. The FDA has several obstacles in the regulation of biotechnology improvements, including issues of effective governance, transparency, and obsolete rules, among others. In addition, one of the key principles to focus on is accountability. The Food and Drug Administration of the United States is held responsible on many levels. They are answerable to the President of the United States, who has the constitutional obligation to ensure that laws are properly implemented and that individuals assigned to positions of authority are carrying out their statutory responsibilities. Furthermore, the food regulatory bodies are responsible to Congress, the courts, and the general public for their actions. However, even with this system of checks and balances, it is possible that it will not be sufficient.
