Template: Personal Philosophy of Nursing Outline
Create a title page following the format for APA 7, review your resources and the APA checklist for help in this step.
Students will submit their outline with a correctly formatted title page and reference page so you can get specific feedback on your APA 7 formatting. In text citation should be attempted in the outline showing where your information is coming from. Goal for the match to other sources should be 20% or less (not including the headings, title pager, and reference lists). If yours is above that you need to review your writing to see where you need to improve to better paraphrase or restate the information.
A nursing philosophy is a statement of your fundamental, foundational, and universal assumptions, beliefs, and principles about the nature of nursing.  In lesson six you will write a paper about your own personal philosophy of nursing and compare your definitions with your selected nursing theory. For this lesson, you will begin to draw from your previous academic and work experiences to gather information and thoughts to get organized. You will receive individual feedback from your instructor on your outline.  The more details that you include, the more opportunity you will have for feedback. However, this is an outline, not a formal paper. There is a template provided to guide you, please use it.  This will allow the paper writing process in lesson 6 to go smoother. Please follow the outline below as a skeleton for your outline and paper. For this assignment, use the template provided with specific details required for the final paper. As you do the reading for this lesson, keep in mind how the theorists you are reading about mirror your thoughts on nursing. The reading will help to guide the development of your personal philosophy.
, A. (2020). Nursing theories and a philosophy of nursing.  http://nursing-theory.org/articles/nursing-theories-and-a-philosophy-of-nursing.php
When citing another page on that website which would be any theory that you are discussing, you would change the title of the webpage to the appropriate one (i.e. Madeleine Leininger- Nuring theorist. https://nursing-theory.org/nursing-theorists/Madeleine-Leininger.php)
Your outline must be clear as to how you will address each of the required topics above (your personal definition should be the standout piece of each section, as this paper is your personal philosophy).  I would also like you to include the citations that will be used for each section, as well as a complete reference list.  You will need at least 3 scholarly sources referenced for this paper.  APA 7 formatting is something that is new to some of you and this will allow you to benefit from instructor feedback on the formatting.
Please click on the assignment heading above to open the assignment, click on the gray box “View Rubric”.  This will tell you how you are being graded on this assignment.  You will always want to look to the far right column in the rubric that is labeled “Proficient”.  These are the criteria you must meet to earn full points on the assignment.  Use the template provided for writing this outline (points will be deducted for not using the template). Review this the rubric again prior to submission to check for any last-minute revisions needed. This is also where you will submit your assignment when ready. You will need to save it to your computer as a document (.doc, .docx, or .pdf format) and then attach using the gray “browse my computer” button.
Template Document:
Introduction: Set the stage to make the paper appealing and intriguing.
Definition of Human Being:  This is your definition of what a human being is and how the human being is composed.  Compare your definition to one nursing theorist’s definition and give examples.
Definition of Environment:  This is your definition of what is meant by environment, both internal/external, in terms of the human being.  Compare your definition to one nursing theorist’s definition and give examples.
Definition of Health:  This is your definition of what is meant by health in terms of the human being.  Remember, this is not asking for the definition of healthy, but what is health, good health, poor health, and where does death or absence of health fit in the schema.  Compare your definition to one nursing theorist’s definition and give examples.
Definition of Nursing:  This is your definition of nursing.  This should be a broad, but thorough definition, not specific only to your practice area.  Think about comprehensive, solid, evidenced-based, patient-centered care.  Compare your definition to one nursing theorist’s definition and give examples.
Develop your philosophy’s nursing metaparadigm by stating the relationship of each of the four concepts comprising the nursing metaparadigm (human being, environment, health, and nursing) to each other and how one affects the other.  Please feel free to add a section to this paper on caring if you would like as it has recently been added to this metaparadigm, this is optional for the paper but a common element in many philosophies.
Conclusion:  Summarize the salient information from all the concepts above.
Example of how to set up your outline:
1. Introduction
A. 2 to 3 sentences explaining how you might introduce your paper.  Remember the main idea of the paper is your personal nursing philosophy, therefore you are introducing the main themes or ideas in your personal nursing philosophy here.  You may mention a nursing theory or theorist by name if necessary, but this section should be in your own words. You want to highlight what your paper will be about.
2. Human Being
A. Approximately 2-3 sentences of what your personal definition of a human is.  This can be rough, but remember that the more you include, the more you can get feedback on from the instructor.  Also keep in mind that you are defining a human here, not a human as a patient.  Try to get out of the nurse mindset on this one.  (FYI- All personal definitions should have great depth in your final paper, much more than these 2 to 3 sentences.)
B. One or two sentences or phrases that tell what nursing theorist/theory you are using for comparison in defining the human.
C. Possible example from practice or further detail on thoughts for this section.
D. Citation of source.  (Author, year)  If you have included this in any of the sections above that is sufficient.
3. Environment
A. Approximately 2-3 sentences of what your personal definition of environment is.  This can be rough, but remember that the more you include, the more you can get feedback on from the instructor.  Here you want to keep in mind that this is the environment in relation to all humans.  You may always use examples from practice that relate to the environment of the patient, but your definition needs to be clear as to how you define environment in a broad sense.
B. One or two sentences or phrases that tell what nursing theorist/theory you are using for comparison in defining the environment.
C. Possible example from practice or further detail on thoughts for this section.
D. Citation of source.  (Author, year)  If you have included this in any of the sections above that is sufficient.
4. Health
A. Approximately 2-3 sentences of what your personal definition of health is.  This can be rough, but remember that the more you include, the more you can get feedback on from the instructor.
B. One or two sentences or phrases that tell what nursing theorist/theory you are using for comparison in defining health.
C. Possible example from practice or further detail on thoughts for this section.
D. Citation of source.  (Author, year)  If you have included this in any of the sections above that is sufficient.
5. Nursing
A. Approximately 2-3 sentences of what your personal definition of nursing is.  This can be rough, but remember that the more you include, the more feedback you can receive from the instructor.  Again keep in mind that this is the nurse in a generalist view, not specific to your specialty.
B. One or two sentences or phrases that tell what nursing theorist/theory you are using for comparison in defining nursing.
C. Possible example from practice or further detail on thoughts for this section.
D. Citation of source.  (Author, year)  If you have included this in and of the sections above that is sufficient.
6. Relationships
A.  Give 2 to 3 sentences to explain how you might go about displaying the relationships between your concepts. These are the relationships that you see in your philosophy. (In the final paper it should be clear how your personally defined concept of nursing relates to your defined concepts human, the environment, and health. The same goes for all four of the concepts.) Again, this is your philosophy’s concepts, so this section should be all in your own words.
7. Conclusion
A. 2 to 3 sentences on how you might conclude your paper. The conclusion should tie the entire thing together, clearly wrapping up what you set as the main themes in the introduction. Conclusion should not introduce new information.
8. References
Provide a complete reference list in APA format (You should have one for every citation at the least but you may have more here that you are still considering for use in the paper.) You need a minimum of 3 good sources. Please give this your very best attempt at a reference list in APA. Use your resources provided in the course and the APA manual. See pages 316-352 of APA manual textbook for examples and details on formatting this.
