Week 7 dq 1 response 6 386
Hello Professor Morris/Class,
According to Verywell Mind, “Addiction is a chronic brain condition influenced by genes and the environment that is characterized by substance use or compulsive actions that continue despite harmful consequences” ( Hartney, 2021) The challenges of working with clients that are living with substance abuse, is to convince them that addiction is treatable, but they must have the desire to change. There are several theories that model addiction. The theoretical perspective that I think is most appropriate for working with this population is social learning model and cognitive behavior. According to  Human Behavior and the Social Environment, the social learning model helps to increase a person’s sense of self efficacy (Dale & Smith, 2013). Whereas, cognitive behavioral therapy is used to encourage addicts to give up the euphoric recall and accept that they cannot go back to using normally, and it  reduces the risk of relapse among drug abusers (Dale & Smith, 2013).
Thank you,
Renee
